Travel Safety for the Ladies

While the days of women being viewed as vulnerable is now gone, they are nonetheless still targets for a lot of individuals with not-so-good intentions. When women travel, most especially when they travel alone, they become almost instantly become targets. In spite of this, women can still travel anywhere they want, even travel alone, and make it home safe and sound. These tips are compiled to help women of all ages to travel safely to whatever destination they like.

  1. Know your destination- Some familiarity with your destination can go a long way in keeping yourself safe. If you know what you can expect from your destination, your odds of staying safe increase dramatically. Researching and planning your trip in advance will ensure that you are well-prepared once you arrive there and help you avoid potential trouble. From learning the means to get around to knowing the nature of the communities there, knowing your destination can save you from a lot of trouble.

  1. Keep your valuables secure- It is important that at all points of your travel, all of your valuable stuff should be kept safely. From your passport to your mobile phone, all these things should be hidden in a safe place. If you can lock them up at your hotel room, you should do it. Also, when going outside, it would be smart to bring only the essentials with you. Save yourself from the trouble and travel light, especially when going outdoors. You don’t want to attract unwanted attention towards you.

  1. Drink responsibly- One of the fun things when traveling is drinking an alcoholic drink or two. While it is OK to drink and socialize, it is important that you stay on top of the situation at all times. Only drink as much as your body would allow. Don’t go beyond your tolerance point as it can get you into trouble. Also, don’t receive drinks from strangers. There are some stories of women being “drugged” while drinking. Lastly, drink at a safe pace and never turn drinking into a competition.

  1. Dress up appropriately- For your own comfort and safety, it is important that you dress appropriately for the situation. You have to wear clothes that are appropriate for the weather. You should also consider wearing comfortable footwear, especially if you plan to do a lot of walking. Also, never wear clothes that are too revealing as it would attract too much attention to yourself. Lastly, respect the fashion norms of the place you’re visiting, if they do exist.

  1. Be careful when socializing- One of the most fun things when traveling is getting to know other people. While making friends on the road is highly encouraged (and there are a lot of great people out there), it is important that you do it in a safe manner. Be wary of people who may not have your best interests in mind. If you see any suspicious behavior, back off. Also, it doesn’t hurt to make the person earn your trust first. My family and I traveled to Little Rock, AR one time and rented a home. The garage broke and the first tech we called to fix it kept insisting my wife come “see something in the truck”. It was very suspicious. So we fired him and called Direct Service Overhead Garage Door Company. The man who then came out was very courteous and went on to tell us exactly who that creepy other man was. Turns out he was a big perv!
